Masks can inspire sympathy or terror. Masks are an artificial representation of reality and transform the wearer of the mask. Masked pageantry and dances were an important cultural aspect in Mexico, long before the Spanish arrived. They were part of hand made jaguar maskhighly developed forms of religion, as well as being social and political. Festivals were planned and took place during the calendar year. Even under Spanish rule (1600-1824) when laws were passed to ban these festivals they were performed in secret.

Today, ethnic groups have retained aspects of Hispanic festivals along with some European forms. Many different dances are still performed all throughout Mexico; Carnival, Los Viejos, Macho Cabrio, Los Pesadores, Los Tejorones, Judas, Juan Negro, La Mojiganga de los Diablos, La Muerta and more.

The handmade masks we offer are lively symbols of this complex history.
